Saturday, March 12: A Fantastic End to AmeriCorps Week

Since we last spoke AmeriCorps Week continued to be a week of fellowship through various service projects, networking events and celebration.  Here are some highlights from InterCorps Council events which took place on Saturday, March 12th in Hartford.

The day began with about 30 AmeriCorps members, friends, and family going to the Hartford Family Day Foundation to volunteer. The Family Day Foundation brings together families in Hartford to Keney Park to participate in recreational, educational, and economic activities. We worked in the greenhouse; cleaned up  the frisbee golf course; planted seeds and bulbs in hanging baskets; worked in the community garden and mulched flower beds. Sophia Vasylyk, an InterCorps member from Public Allies, was so inspired that she wrote the following philosophical poem on picking up sticks at Keney Park:

We pick sticks up to take care of the park
But I see some of them rooted into the ground,
small trees.
Some wrap around older, larger roots.

We pick them up -- twigs
that thought they could stand without roots.

After the action packed morning volunteers and other guests navigated through the St. Patrick’s Parade in downtown Hartford, to Center Church for the Closing Ceremony. The crowd gave our pizza a warm round of applause!

At the Closing Ceremony we had amazing food, a photo booth, decorations, and fun ice breakers, competitions and prizes. We would just like to extend a warm thank you to Miriam Bonhomme, who put in so many hours in setting up the closing ceremony, and to AmeriCorps CT alums, who also helped us tremendously, and to all of you who participated in our events!

All in all, the day was a success and we can't wait for our other projects!  If you participated in AmeriCorps Week please share your favorite memories below!

AmeriCorps Week: Service Saturday part 1

AmeriCorps members, families, friends, and others launched AmeriCorps week with a bang! We engaged, inspired, and had fun! Here is the rundown...

New Haven:
Future Coaches

65 New Haven high school students and 25 future coach volunteers came together in an Action Marathon. During the event, future coach volunteers supported students in creating action steps to move their future projects along.  We enlisted volunteers to make flyers and assist at events;sent emails to potential donors; created timelines and proposals, and budgets for their events.
