Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service – January 2016

The 2016 MLK Day event was a success and was a DAY ON!  Thank you to all members across the state who partook in the weekend of remembrance, reflection and service.  We engaged, educated and aided members of our communities from tiny tots to older adults.  Below are a few of the AmeriCorps sponsored service projects that happened across Connecticut:

  • InterCorps Council of Connecticut  ( ICC) and AmeriCorps Alums of Connecticut
    • Participated at the Peabody Museum annual MLK event and had an interactive activity in which children posted how they give back to their community (“Lend  A Helping Hand”)  and their dreams for the future (“I Have a Dream”).
    • Volunteers provided over 22 hours of service to help residents at Bella Vista Senior Center continue to be safe in their homes by cleaning and organizing their apartments.
  • Area Health Education Center (AHEC)
    • Transported AHEC mentees to a MLK Youth Explosion put together by the Concerned Black Clergy Council of Waterbury.  The event began with speakers emphasizing MLK values and culminating in workshops that were attended by students and Senator Blumenthal and Superintendent Ouellette.
    • On Monday, Middle School and High School students distributed food outside, ran a winter coat drive, and invited community members inside for popcorn and a movie at Waterbury Baptist Ministries.

  • Community HealthCorps (CHCACT)
    • In Norwalk, CT Members handed out 85 flyers about prostate cancer, and engaged community members in conversations about health disparities and the importance of preventative check-ups with a primary care physician.
    • Community HealthCorps members also had a table at the Yale Peabody Museum and taught over 30 children and families to build a balanced meal through an interactive My Plates activity.
  • New England Science and Sailing STEM Education Ambassadors (NESS SEA)
    • Painted apartment doors for Safe Futures, a domestic violence support organization
    • Hosted an Afternoon of Giving with the help of local students, FoodCorps, CHC Inc., Campus Compact/Higher Edge and Community HealthCorps to:
*make and give 22 fleece blankets to children in CT hospitals.
*decorate over 150 Valentine’s Day cards and give to veterans/patients in CT hospitals.
  • PAVE New Haven, Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut
    • Joined local community organizations to staff the annual Martin Luther King Jr. conference in which over one-hundred students and adults from the community attended workshops on financial literacy, self-care, emotional intelligence, African drumming, and more!
    • Canvassed three housing developments and reached over 300 households to spread the word about the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA).
  • Public Allies of CT (PACT)
    • Facilitated workshops, welcomed visitors and participated in other activities at the Yale Peabody Museum’s MLK Event.
    • PACT volunteering sites for the day included United Way Wexler-Grant School’s MLK Event.
    • Allies sorted donations for refugees at IRIS.
    • Installed equipment at Baobob Tree Studios.
    • Alumni and guests painted the new PACT office in downtown New Haven .
